This Sunday, as i suffered through the waves of folks coming from church to satisfy their hunger for boneless buffalo wings and cheeseburgers – I was sat with a table of four that would prompt this entire post. On the right was an older couple (late 50′s early 60′s) and on the left was a tool academy candidate with his girlfriend. This atypical frat-esque individual had pulled into the parking lot and proceeded to take up SIX parking spaces with his lifted F250 while pulling his racing 350Z on the trailer. His copy cat haircut, A&F Jeans, and Ed Hardy t-shirt; had automatically made me dislike this guy right away. However he was about to take it a step further; suprised i was not. I started into my greet…was immediately cut off. That was not what made this waste of space and posterboy for people that servers loathe unique. The ensuing conversation went something like this.

Moron: “I’ll take the broccoli cheese soup.”
Blameless incredibly handsome server: “I’m terribly sorry sir. They have taken that off the menu and we are completely out.”
Moronic Moron: “Your kidding me. You must not want a tip, that’s the biggest mistake you’ve ever made.”

Now I’m pretty sure…that I’ve made bigger mistakes than that in my life. Lying to my parents when i was younger, dating that girl who drove me to drinking – I’m fairly certain i have that beat. Furthermore, last time i checked my particular company/concept did not sit me down at a meeting and ask what i think we should remove from the menu. If they have and for some reason it’s escaped my memory – i expect some monetary supplement. I rank these kind of people right up there with those who blame me for their overcooked steak; even though i was in their direct line of sight for 95 percent of their dining experience. I digress, the rest of their meal was uneventful and luckily the older couple paid. Sadly out of all my tables that particular day – the best tip and propriety came from 4 strippers who came in looking like they had spent a night out with a younger Robert Downey Jr.

Hello Folks, My name is HEY YOU! and i’ll be taking care of you this evening. How hard is it to listen for 10-15 seconds while a server does his opening spiel? We tell you our name so that when you need something, you can call us by our name and acknowledge the fact that we are in fact – Human. Most people with a pulse understand that treating people with respect will get you better service. I solve this by telling them my name when i greet the table and again when I’m finished taking the order. The purpose of this blog will be to discuss topics pertaining to serving; with future topics ranging from dealing with customers to learning how to memorize orders. First question I will put out there is this.

What is the single worst experience you had dealing with a small table (4 people or less)?
